Fort Frances
Another day of relaxing and some billable hours ahead - but first the usual morning walk to explore our local area. Yesterday we did half of downtown Fort Frances, now for the rest...

Our walk took us across the trainline twice. Our minds going to the locals who on regular occasion will have to wait 10 minutes for these huge trains to pass. The other day Hild counted 165 carriages... But we keep in mind that they are carrying all the useful stuff that we all need!
The planned route took us past a local park that was marked as Lillie Avenue Park on the map, but turned out to now be Legion Park. It was nice with picnic tables, play ground structures, and lots of lawn to play games on.

There were an incredible number of dragon flies out and about this morning! They are hard to capture on camera but we enjoyed their darting this way and that, especially since they are very good at avoiding us - so no awkward collisions between man and insect... phew. So one more item for our "Spot-Species" list on the Nerdy page. This also reminded us that we had forgotten to add Fireflies from Grasslands National Park.
Next we found the original location of the Hudson Bay Company's trading store in Fort Frances, originally known as Lac La Pluie. The little white house is just located on the store site after it burned down in 1903, still we felt sorry for the house being all abandoned, by the look of things, so we took a photo of it.
The mainstreet of Fort Frances is called Scott Street, and the area has many nice albeit a bit old murals to enjoy.
More recently they have built a square with a small stage and places for people to sit - and free wifi: Rainy Lake Square. Nice to see that they are still investing and fixing things here.
The museum was closed, but we took a photo anyway. Nice bell!
Of peculiar items today we had:
  • A tree clearly leaning away from the power/phone lines to avoid having its brances cut.
  • A hobbit-like hut entrance to city utilities.
  • The Fort Frances watertower - not really peculiar but we find them fun and unusual to look at.
  • The choice faced by everyone in Fort Frances - go to the USA or go East...
  • ... and then we let sleeping dogs lie.
The rest of the day will be filled with billable hours... so not much to share except photo of our delicious lunch - "Pytt-i-Panne" (in Norwegian) or breakfast hash with fried egg.

Coming up: Driving from Fort Frances to Red Rock - straight past Thunder Bay.
