Montreal Bike Ride 37.4 km. 2:31 hours. Elevation maximum 39 metres
Whenever we have a day in Montreal we go for a bike ride - and this trip is no exception! Not only a bike ride, but also a train to get there as we used the Metro to get to our usual bike rental place from where we are staying in Longueuil! Two birds with one stone!
A big part of us choosing this hotel was how close it is to the Longueuil Metro station so that we could just jump on the train (after buying a ticket!) and then Ca Roule is just a short walk from Place d'Armes metro station. We were there nice and early to get our bikes and we were on our way before 9.30 so that we could be away before it got too hot - there is a heat warning for Montreal today!
First stop was some rapids where we could look out to Isle of Herons - well we saw one so it must well-named! There were a lot of birds there - and plenty of people drawing them! As well as the heron, there was a nice egret and a lot of terns swooping over the water. We saw plenty of blackbirds too, but as neither of us have pony-tails they didn't attack us (as the Ottawa blackbirds do!). There were also some kids paddling down in white water rafts we heard them before we saw them.... Later on there were people surfing on a standing wave just off the bank - it looked really cool!
We carried on to Parc René-Levesque for lunch. We see a lot of things named after René Levesque in Montreal making it very hard to navigate! In this case we just had to stay on the path alongside the river so it wasn't too difficult, but we didn't really get the artwork! By the time we had eaten lunch, we didn't have a lot of time left to get the bikes back so we just cycled along the Lachine Canal right back into the center of the City. We found an interesting bicycle roundabout - with plenty of arrows to let you know which way to go, but it didn't confuse us - too much. We just about made it in the 4 hours after cycling over 37 km.
After that we needed a Gatorade and an ice-cream before going back to the hotel. We held out long enough to walk over to a mall to grab some dinner and now we are chilling out for the last night away!
Coming up: Homeward Bound!
