Back home to Burnham on Sea! 297 km driving, 4:18 hours to a max altitude of 240 metres.
|
The time had come that we should return home to Burnham. We got up early - almost with
the sun - and packed up the tent and our stuff. It is a quick task these days as
we are quite practiced now.
During our drive southward on M6 and M5 we decided to stop in Gloucester as it was lunch time.
It took us two goes to find the turn-off to our small car park.
Percy fit under the horizontal barrier – only just. There weren’t
many cars today, so we were lucky.
It wasn’t an accident that we chose this place for a hike and lunch.
We wanted to scope out nearby, Lower Parting, so we can return to see the River Severn Tidal Bore.
|
|
To hike over to Lower Parting from our car park, we had to go along
well-prepared paths as well as grassy tracks that would be very
muddy on rainy days. We had to go through twisty-gates as well as
amusing double-kissing-gates. At one point we were climbing a wooden
step stile although there was a (less fun) gate alternative.
|
|
We found signs indicating different directions we could come to
Lower Parting from. We’ll keep this in mind if we return to find the small car park full.
|
|
Lower Parting is one of the best places to watch the Severn Bore,
a large tidal surge wave. This Bore can travel up to 20 kph and be
2 meters high. When the conditions are such that the Bore is at
its highest, one can surf it. This is also possible in Canada in the
Bay of Fundy where we went in 2023.
Now that we have scoped it out, we’ll aim to return near the next largest Bore.

There were clearly cattle here most days even if we didn’t see them.
We did see a very new salt lick. Rob thought he’d give it a try. Sheep
salt-licks are not bad, Hild tells him.

|
We walked by what we can only hope is a derelict rugby field.
The rugby posts were installed between a busy road and power lines!
Seems contra-indicated for playing rugby.
|
|
... and so, we had our very last picnic lunch in the back of Percy - during this trip at least.
|
|
After a couple more hours on the road and a stop at Costco,
we were home in Burnham. It was time for a giant cups of tea while
enjoying the latest episode of our favourite quiz show: Richard Osman's
House of Games. Good to be back but sad that this trip is over.

Coming up: That's it. No more. Just back to "normal" life in Burnham on Sea.
