Lerwick
|
Again we spent the morning working and catching up on emails and such.
Then we drove in to Lerwick to visit St Magnus Church. It was the church
where they had the service last year for Auntie Aileen's funeral. It is a
beautiful building from 1864 with a tower added in 1891.

|
The stained-glass
windows are a mix of originals made for this church and those moved
from another chapel.
|
|
On each row there is an individual embroidered kneeler. Beautiful.
|
|
The pulpit stands halfway down the church. Nearby there is a memorial
plaque for Canadian airmen who died in the Second World War.
|
|
Near the altar original painted walls are seen - previously covered by
wallpaper.

We had lunch at Skipidock Cafe. Each table had a different name such
as Bressay, Trondra, and Burra. It was pretty full when we got there
so we got an unnamed table, which they said they call Lerwick.

Afterwards we spent some time visiting the kind people at
Shetland Family History Society. As usual, they all knew of Hild's
granddad due to the shoe shop. They had childhood memories of having their
feet measured for new shoes. One of them remembers Hild's mum.
We have now signed up for online membership and look forward to a quarterly
newsletter and access to their online database. Ian and Mina are there
to help if we can't find what we need ourselves. We are most excited
about them being able to search for family relationships between two
different people. The plan is to ask for their help to see if there is
a connection between Hild's granddad Pottinger with our Scalloway landlady's
Pottinger. They were born around the same time. Fingers crossed that we
learn something fun.
